Rome Fragments (2004)
This series of paintings was produced following Janine's artist residency at the American Academy in Rome. Each painting begins with a collage of either found fragments of the city environment (photographs) of constructed ones (fragments from trash and ephemera). These elements become the foundation of the painting atop which subsequent layers of collage and paint are applied. Rome Fragments transforms the concepts of fractured nature of memory and the passage of time into a physical form.
